TSA employees have been working without pay during a partial shutdown of DHS over demands to reform immigration enforcement.
More than 400 Transportation Security Administration workers have quit since a partial government shutdown that began on Feb. 14 left them working without pay, the Department of Homeland Security said.
Funding was shut off to DHS over demands by Democrats for reforms at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection following alleged abuses and the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this year.
There has also been a national callout rate of 10% at TSA on more than half the days of the last week, Lauren Bis, acting assistant secretary for public affairs at DHS, said Saturday in response to questions.
I don’t know about you, but I am so fucking sick of winning.
is it really quitting if your employer stops paying you?
We’ve gotta get those numbers up!
Only thing better than a strike is a mass exodus.
Except now we have ICE in the airports.
Winning?ICE is completely untrained and ignorant of what the TSA does, if TSA walked today all airports would basically shut down.
The airports should shut down. Whatever fuckery actually happens may be entirely different.
They’d need to make a choice to declare the TSA is all for show or shut down in my mind. What do you imagine they’d do?
I wouldn’t have a clue. Nothing this administration does makes sense. Just imagine the most self-serving, ineffective, grifting option and choose that. Seems to be what the admin likes to do.
As far as the TSA goes I seem to be saying this a lot… think of how privatization f’s up everything. Whenever costs or profits are placed against safety, safety loses every time. Think of the single ATC controller events lately that have likely contributed to deaths: The DCA mid-air collision, and just the other day the LGA aircraft and vehicle collision. While it’s impossible to prove a negative, it’s highly likely that had there been additional controllers dedicated to ground and tower frequencies and monitoring these events wouldn’t have happened - not because profits but because cutting personnel costs saves money.
The airport security was done by private contractors prior to the TSA. 9/11 brought the TSA into being, and regardless of whether or not you agree with its existence, it at least has to let us know about its failings, budget, and any successes. When it replaced the security contractors it seemed obvious to just hire the people already doing for the private contractors. They discovered fake identities, undisclosed criminal records, people wanted on warrants, etc.
There is no perfect system. If you want private, they’re gonna fuck up just as much as the TSA…maybe even more because of that intersection with profits. I’m not advocating for the TSA, I just think that giving security’s job to a corporation that will profit and make some rich guys richer until it kills a bunch of people then go bankrupt after being sued while nobody gets held accountable is just more right wing bullshit.
Eh. I support ICE harassing people with some degree of resources and influence for a change.
they already are assaulting passengers.
Republicans read this and go “hell yea. More unemployment!!!”
“Look what democrats are doing to our country!”
“Why would Obama do this?!”
What a poorly worded article by NBC yet again. They refuse to state the truth because trump will sick his group of criminals on them, we don’t have free press anymore.
Also, who would want to work for a broke employer anyway? We are $39 TRILLION in debt thanks mostly to Donald Trump raising it $1 trillion every 4 months.
Funny how no other country either shuts down their government on a regular basis or needs the level of security theater of the TSA. Shit hole country.
its a convenient weapon created by the go, which the DEMs enabled. i think other countries would have a re-election of the govt at this point, US has no such mechanism, thats why it continues to spiral downward to oblivion.
I really don’t understand why any of them are showing up for work at all.
they convinced them theyw ill get back pay? most already quit by now,
Absolutely, sunk cost fallacy.
You’re on a contract that fucks up all the time. Historically, you’ve always gotten paid eventually. You wait it out a week, two, you could say screw it and walk then, but now it’s well, if I walk, i won’t get x dollars, let’s just wait it out a little. Vicious cycle.
Good. We really don’t need any security theater anyway
Unfortunately you continue to get security theater, but with an exponential increase in racism.
Well…it does stand for Theatre Security Agency.
So the US is now stuck with ICE agents everywhere until they get DOGEd out? No real freedom of movement anymore and I imagine these guys are worse than cops. I anticipate they’ll make gangs out of themselves cause they’re so large and unchecked
We know that recruitment standards are quite low for ICE. So you can guess that every cartel will be trying to get their own people in there. Do you know who will not be bothered by cops while smuggling drugs? Your ICE convoy with masked gunmen. And if you take over security on an airport, that’s even better.
I anticipate they’ll make gangs out of themselves cause they’re so large and unchecked
Cops already do this
That is a paramilitary gang. Those are not law enforcement. They don’t follow laws.
Working this hated job and hoping to maybe get paid is fucked up on so many levels.
they lure them in with healthcare fully paid and maybe a retirement plan. ice is already harassing people at blue airports, SFO, seattle, etc.
I doubt they get healthcare or a retirement plan. TSA is a job which has near zero skill requirements and will hire anyone.
Let’s remove your doubt
But who’s going to grope children and ransack luggage?
Oh right, ICE.
Nevermind, crisis averted.
And this raises the question: the people who quit from TSA: where do they go work next?
Is ICE systematically poaching all the employees working for other federal, state and local enforcement agencies?
I’m sure airlines will be thrilled about having their customers kidnapped by ICE during security checks. Because that’s how “illegals” sneak into the country, right? By buying an airline ticket and FLYING IN. Just think of the headlines.
My favorite TSA experience was how my nephew was on a no fly list and we didnt find this out until we waited through two hours in line.
My nephews age at the time? 6 months old. The No Fly order was older than he was.
Lots of critical thinking going on with that lot, lemme tell you.
Because that’s how “illegals” sneak into the country, right?
Actually, yes. 40% of undocumented immigrants came in legally (many on planes) and simply overstayed their visa.

Did you notice the part where I said “overstayed” their visa? There is a difference between illegal immigration and undocumented immigration. Both overstaying your visa and sneaking over the border are illegal. Only sneaking over the border is undocumented. ICE is going after illegal immigration in all forms.
Well no, someone entering legally isn’t sneaking in illegally.
Once you overstay your visa, you are not here legally. Those are 40% of the illegal immigrants in this country. There is a difference between undocumented and illegal. ICE is going after illegal immigration in all forms, not just the people sneaking over the border.
That’s not sneaking in illegally, that’s overstaying illegally.
If you want to be a pedantic dickbag and focus on the word “sneaking” when the key part of the post (which was conveniently written in all caps in case you have a hard time understanding the point of the simple sentence) was FLYING IN and “illegals,” then sure, you are correct. They are “illegals” whether they sneak in or overstay. And the post was also about what ICE is doing. They aren’t only going after people who sneak in. They are going after all illegal immigration.
I do realize that I called them undocumented immigrants, when I don’t know if they are still considered “documented” if their documents are no longer valid/legal.
My gripe is that we shouldn’t be entertaining the narrative that people sneak in illegally at all by being cute and saying that people who illegally overstay their legal visas who legally and transparently entered are sneaking in illegally.
They should get paid, but I’m not sorry that a government “make work” project is losing people.
How many threats has the TSA stopped?
All the water bottles
I’ve been ‘randomly’ screened all but one time for ‘extra security’ in the last decade (around 12 times). I’m a disabled dude who uses a cane for very short trips, and a chair for things like (shocking) dealing with the 30 minute trip to my gate. I even have PreCheck, because trying to take my shoes off and open my luggage when the right half of my body is basically deadweight isn’t the greatest experience.
Also most of these times (10, I think) I also had one or both bags (carry-on and stowed) searched, because of ‘unusual’ or ‘suspicious’ objects. The objects in question have once been a laptop (those damn suspicious rectangles!) and the rest were bad dragon dildos. The first time it happened I was embarrassed, but by the 3rd time, I was smirking as they pulled out a big black canine cock, highlighter-pink liger (lion-tiger hybrid) cock, and/or a small marbled purple and cream liger cock, realizing that they are holding it up to inspect it, showing it to everyone in the area - including the children - and then very quickly stuffed it back into the bag.
The only thing tsa is good for is making people lose $125 (or whatever the price is now), embarrassing them, and showing dicks to underage children, essentially.
Precheck is an extortion fee
the rest were bad dragon dildos
I’ve seen other posts of people buying those specifically to fuck with TSA like that. Such a good idea.
I do it because I want to use them on my trip, but :P that’s amusing
Multi-purpose dildos!
The best kind ;3
I’m here to give you my personal experience.
I’ve had countless experiences in which the TSA has thwarted me. At least half a dozen nail clippers, two or three bottle openers, and countless beverages.
Who will save the economy when we aren’t re-purchasing these items after flights?
TSA is the School Resource Officer of airports. They have stopped nothing and cost money that can go to other quality of life projects with better returns, like new bathrooms.
They certainly didn’t stop Adam Savage from accidentally taking a foot long razor onto a plane in his carry on.
They catch someone trying to board with a gun every month.
The overwhelmingly vast majority of those are normal travelers who didn’t realize that they weren’t following the rules.
Also such thing would be caught in a standard screening process used all over the world operated by their own airport
Where can I learn more about this from a trustworthy source?
Narrator: You can’t because it’s not real
There’s no way to quantify that and you know it.
That’s the same as asking “How many deaths have seatbelts prevented?” Only the ones that didn’t happen…
Airports are required by law to screen their passengers. If everyone from TSA quits because they’re not getting paid, who do you think is going to replace them? Do you really think it wouldn’t be something worse?
This partial shutdown is happening because of ICE’s abuses of power, but ICE is still getting paid. This whole situation is beyond fucked up, and you’re choosing to focus on the wrong thing.
Airports are required by law to screen their passengers.
Yeah with things like metal detectors. There’s no law requiring a bunch of ineffective humans.
Who operates the metal detectors? Are you suggesting we replace humans with AI? Who else do you think would replace them? Because it looks like they’d be replaced by ICE…
Be careful what you fucking wish for
That’s the same as asking “How many deaths have seatbelts prevented?”
Just like measuring the effectiveness of the TSA, it is possible to measure the effectiveness of seatbelts.
So yes, you can come up with an estimate of how many excess deaths TSA prevented. (Especially since the government tends to try to convict people who were trying to kill people.)
That ignores all the potential incidents that no one ever attempted because of the deterrent effect of security screenings.
That’s where the seat belt analogy fails, cause you can still analyze car accidents. Seat belts don’t really deter crashing.
But a culture of airline permissiveness like you had in the 80s/90s is much more encouraging to would-be skyjackers/saboteurs than one of compulsive security screenings
And this rock keeps tigers away, how much would you like to pay me for it?
How many skyjackings have there been since airports started screening passengers?
Compare that to how frequently they occurred in the 80s and 90s…
I just want the damned newsletter!
well Homan confirms that ice will be doing part of what TSa doing, so most likely using ice as cannon fodder.
I’m honestly surprised the number is that low. If I wasn’t getting paid, I’d be looking for another job immediately.
i heard blue states specifically pays them even with the shutdown? maybe it skewing the numbers. and trump has sicced ICE on mostly blue area airports right now.
Ditto. I need a steady paycheck. No one should put up with an employer who refuses to pay earned pay.
I am honestly still surprised that after decades upon decades of doing this, Trump still manages to get away with refusing to pay workers what they are owed. Somehow people just forget that or don’t think he won’t pay them.
In some cases there are some people who are wising up to him. The Kurds, for example, remember the sudden betrayal and withdrawal that Trump did in his first term and made it clear that they refuse to fight Iran or participate in his campaign in any way.
I quit one of my many jobs because i didnt receive payment for one single day xd
Look at the jobs report and you’ll see why they’d rather tough it out/haven’t been hired anywhere else in all this time.
on the subreddit theres a whole latter chatter about tsa and dare i say it ICE people not getting paid.
A lot of banks have been giving 0% loans to those affected, so the situation isn’t really as dire as media is making it out to be. This happens pretty regularly now during shutdowns.
We’re talking about people who aren’t capable of getting real jobs. That’s why they are TSA goons.
what an insane thing to say. the job market in the usa is genuinely hell. people with degrees, experience, and skills still do not get jobs even after trying for sometimes years.
Minimum wage jobs are definitely available to those people, it’s just that such a low wage is literally not worth their time, and certainly won’t cover their student loans.
We’re great now, right?
