The United States justice system is based on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. He has not been proven guilty. As such he is innocent in the eyes of the law.

Keeping him behind bars might well have prevented him from planning additional attacks or even being elevated to political prominence.

If you imprison people based on what they might do, you no longer have a justice system. All you have is a lawless police state.

Torture. The word you’re looking for is torture. The CIA & FBI tortured this man for over twenty years.

Whether or not you have sympathy for Mohammed, how he’s been treated is an absolute shit-show. Remember, this man has yet to be convicted of a crime, and the crime they’re going after him for, heinous though it may be, happened 25 years ago.

Here’s the rub - if they have the evidence to convict, then they don’t need the confession. Yet they found the need to waterboard this man for 20+ years to obtain it. This means that the other evidence they have against him is too flimsy to secure a conviction on its own.

And that means they’ve been torturing a technically innocent man for three decades to save face.

In many cases, the mod team was selectively replaced after the story ran out of steam. A number of smaller communities did go dark and stayed dark, but Reddit forced the opening of several of the major ones.

There was a significant migration to lemmy, but many didn’t stay, and ended up back on Reddit. We’re in the middle of a 2nd surge with the removal of old.reddit.com from the public (not logged in) front-end, but it’s more of a steady stream as individual users get fed up, not the big wave that hit with the API announcement.

I think this time folks are going to stay. Reddit’s content quality and frequency of OC has plummeted, while it’s been steadily rising on the Fediverse. And the dialog here is vastly better.

That’s the real driver as to whether people stay on a social media site - the conversations with other users. Reddit has started to heavily censor and manipulate that conversation, and is dying as a result.

On the Fediverse, that conversation is alive and thriving. And as long as it is, this place will continue to grow.

The content has taken a nosedive in the last three months - just take a look at /r/all and you’ll see duplicate postings appearing on the feed within the first 100 posts.

The quality of the conversation has plummeted as well. Most comments are one or two sentences, and usually just reaction posts. You can see where the AI bots have taken over - entire comment chains where old reddit tropes are just passed back and forth without any real context, critique, humor, or understanding.

It’s no longer a discussion forum. It’s a reaction machine, pushing a narrative that has been stripped of anything original that could be disruptive to the status quo… in other words, stripped of the very humanity that made it valuable for ChatGPT in the first place.

The core of your question is really “Why do people suggest therapy when I want to talk about my negative emotions?”

Because working through a damaged psyche isn’t something your friends and family are qualified to do, and they’re likely going to make it worse or damage their relationship with you if they try.

But I get why you’re asking - you reach out during a dark time looking for support and community amongst those you know, and they use “you should talk to a therapist” to dismiss the conversation, which really doesn’t solve anything and ends up making you feel worse by suggesting that only a professional you pay would want to listen to you.
