If someone hates their current last name and likes a fictional character’s last name, like Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Danny Rand, or Clark Kent, and legally changes their last name to one of those, would it cost them job opportunities?

Ask Hitler’s descendants who have changed their name.

In the most extreme circumstances, yes, people will distance themselves from a disgraced name. Hitler, Epstein, and soon to be Trump. Like right now the name is still connected to power (as well as the atrocities) so it still helps those who have it, but once the king is deposed in a few years, it’ll be different.

Even web handles carry weight. I had a pretty legendary username once. I had movies named after (but not about) me. I got tired of being Internet famous, so I dropped it. Of course Internet fame is very subjective; I mean obviously I was big enough that movies were being named after me, the name was inspiring in some way to people with money (but apparently not enough to offer me any, not like I ever copyrighted or trademarked it), but if you hadn’t heard of me, I wouldn’t be surprised. I used to be on one community for a popular game once. Another community for that game made a mod for it and put a lot of their popular members in the game. (I’ll tell you this one. The game is Deus Ex, the mod is The Nameless Mod, and the forum was Planet Deus Ex (part of the GamePlanet network).) I didn’t know who any of those people were. But in their community, they were legends. Like the bad guy, Scara B. King was this really famous troll there (scarab king), and they put him in the game. You’re supposed to know these people, but you only would if you were in that community. It’s like that, I guess. (Sidebar: Scara B. King was an awesome character and I loved listening to him, and how he’d get your name wrong every single time. Not sure who voiced him (the real person behind the name, or someone else) but they did an excellent job.)
