  • That’s the reason for the qualifier “by and large.” Yes, it is possible, but not equally achievable for all people in poverty be it due to individual circumstance or lack of personal ability. I’m quite happy for your parents and I’m sure they must have worked hard to find success. But the system would not allow for the underclass as a whole to find a way out of poverty at the same time. The only way that can happen is to change the system.

  • I do try to enjoy Tom Scott because he puts effort into his content, it’s usually educational, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

But I feel that cringe element too. For me it has to do with the fact that he has such an ingratiating personality. He just wants so badly to ensure that everyone and everything is appreciated to the fullest extent and he’s made completely sure no one can take anything in the wrong way. And that’s a lovely attitude to have in life, but as a presentation style it also feels a bit exhausting. I still watch his videos, but in small doses. There’s only so much well-intentioned earnestness I can take in one sitting.

Public ownership + a proletarian ruling party ≠ the working class controls the state.

State ownership is not automatically worker control. Even if a ruling party genuinely represents the working class, that does not by itself establish that ordinary workers possess meaningful power over the state or over the party leadership.
