@BarHocker How are you powering the fans? It almost looks like they’re plugged into the 12V/5V sata power converter, but there’s no 3/4pin connectors there obviously.

@mlg @leanleft otoh, it could be argued that widespread usage of NATs kept people from actually hardening their software stacks. For servers, admins moved from hole-ridden garbage like sendmail to stuff that was designed with security in mind like postfix. However, for desktop software and home stuff, there was never much of a need, so a lot of the biggest companies have cultures of extremely sloppy security practices in shipped software. And it’s slated to get worse with AI adoption…

@cmnybo @DanKhramov Doesn’t even need to be a newer CPU. I’m running Immich on an ancient dell laptop w/ i3-4010U. Not efficient in terms of CPU-per-watt these days, but that i3 chip isn’t putting out much heat either.

As far as backups - snapraid sync runs nightly to ensure that accidental deletions or bitrot is caught. Restic backs up to a drive on a separate machine (in a different room of my house). I still need an off-site backup, but the hard drive shortages messed up my plans there…

@KingDingbat I don’t have a good answer for you (I’m in a similar situation, with my wife stuck using both google calendar and microsoft’s extremely shitty calendar, while I use radicale). However, depending upon your goals for self-hosting your calendar, I’d ask whether you really *want* google seeing your calendar entries. If your goal is independence, then fine. If one of your goals is privacy, then sharing your calendar entries w/ google messes that up.

@mvirts Also, if the swap is there, linux will use it. If you have 8gb of swap, the kernel will assume that you want it to use that much swap.

If you don’t want it using that much swap, just reduce your amount of swap. I have various servers (a build machine w/ 96gb of ram, a VPS w/ only 2gb of ram, etc) with zero swap. The vast majority of my machines where I actually want swap? They get 1gb, max. Other than for very specific workloads, there’s no reason to ever have that much swap imo.

@TheRedSpade @pineapplelover Linode got acquired by Akamai and their service (or at least, *my* VPS) has really gone downhill over the past few years.

@anakin78z We use xmpp (prosody on the server; a mix of conversations/cheogram/dino/snikket on our phones and laptops). We’ve got a family chat where the kids share the latest memes, and we message back and forth. We do also have signal (or in my case, Molly) installed, but don’t use it that much. My wife just switched phones and signal was unable to transfer stuff from phone phone to the other - in general I find signal annoying to use.

We use matrix for a few years but it was buggy and dumb.
