I’m thinking of all the posts that start with “As a black/female/teen/minority…” Would be interesting to see how many of those tie back to just being another old ass white dude posting under his alt account.

I’m fucked, Ebola Pie is my given name and I have never lied on the Internet. Luckily my email is safe, though. All of those are securely encrypted with a decoder ring I got out of a cereal box when I was 9.

The solution is pretty simple: Never, under any circumstances, post anything under your actual real identity online.

Doesn’t matter how good the fuzzy linking of disconnected accounts is if none of them tells the attacker anything actionable about the real person behind them.

I’d be curious to test its capabilities. However ChatGPT utterly refuses such a request. Maybe I could fuck around with context poisoning and prompt engineering to get there, but that sounds like a lot of work just to prove this is as fallible as everything else AI does. I’d bet it equates to a lie detector — probably better odds of being correct than a coin flip, but not deterministic enough for a court of law (or for folks to go off on half-cocked).

What do you mean? Humans love going off half-cooked. We’ve been shaming vigilate and mob justice BECAUSE humans love to get half the information and start killing people under fake pretences.

Right. I mean I guess it would be better to say, not enough for folks to go off… fully-cocked? I think the metaphor breaks.

Point being someone is going to go pedo hunting or something, get the wrong person, and ruin their life (or worse).

So what’s the way around that? More burner accounts seems to be about it, which means less camaraderie. I hate we lose what makes us better, in order to better survive the fascists.

The way around it is to not have a public online life.

If it’s too late for that, find someone else with a similar name to you, and use AI to start posting in their writing style.

Burner accounts won’t help much. Somewhat fuzzy association of details from different sources to create a complete picture is what AI is good at (not very precise but with reasonalby good results).

The only actual way around is not sharing stuff you don’t want to share. Omit details in publically accessable online stuff, only share those properly encrypted (with people… not with systems).

You can poison the system with false information about yourself, I suppose. For example, when I was twenty-two, I worked as a ranchhand in Montana for a year. After that, I spent a long time posting as /u/POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS on Reddit and became quite well-known.

Right, but if I have 290 accounts then it’s not like it can piece them together if there’s nothing tying them together like an email. And if I stopped sharing my love for tasty tasty white chocolate, what hope is left?

Honestly, if we are prevented from sharing our authentic selves, or at least who we want to be online, there’s not much point in social media. Everyone talking at one another without ever revealing anything real or true about themselves? It sounds absolutely hellish. Everything I hate about interacting with other people, and none of what makes it worthwhile.

How? There’s barely anything I’ve written on my own name that an AI would have access to and I change details constantly in my anonymous posts.
