Jesus Christ. First they fucked over notepad and introduced dozens of application breaking new bugs and broke decades of existing functionality, now they’re thinking about breaking the damn clock ?

Wait, no, they’ve already broken the clock in windows 11 because it no longer shows seconds, and doesn’t respond to clicks on non primary displays.

I guess they decided it wasn’t broken enough.

I’m getting so sick of their shit, and my employer locks down my laptop so tightly that I can’t run any 3rd party software too, so I can’t even install my own clock application.

Oh you want to see a fun win11ism? Use the calculator to determine the number of days between 2 dates.

Win 10: 2 fields you type in

Win 11: no typing is possible. You must click and scroll through a calendar ui for each date.

I’m not following you… Like most corporates, they’ve locked it down, in this case with BeyondTrust, so that it’s not even possible to run unapproved executables without a dialog box popping up demanding an explanation, which then creates a ticket with security, who casually deny it a few days later.

But the fact that I can’t personally run alternatives on that laptop doesn’t change the fact that Microsoft have pushed out a lot of poorly tested and bug ridden replacements for software that has worked perfectly fine until now.

I don’t know how to be clearer, that’s not your computer at that point. I would absolutely require my employer to provide their own device to implement this security solution.

We’ve been trained to see computing as a nonpolitical thing, but computation in “the information age” is every bit as political as iron was in the iron age, or, I dunno, sails in the age of sail. Stupid examples, I should be asleep right now. The point is that we should view news about all technology through a political lens.

I can’t do smart examples at half past three, so here’s this. If you were a medieval serf and the king had assumed direct mind control over your horse, you would have no difficulty seeing how that was an offense against the social contract and a clear signal that the divine right of kings was flawed. “My horse has been mind-controlled by the court sorcerer, now he won’t breed with the family mare… and yesterday I swear I saw him whispering to a guard!”

You’d just about tolerate that weird shit from a horse the king gifted you, but not your own. But this isn’t the age of horse. Good night!

I think that there was a mix-up of what “their” was referring to in this line of conversation. It seems to me like you two are saying the same thing otherwise.

OC initially referred to it as “my laptop,” you’re correct about that, but that’s kind of a colloquialism - or has been everywhere I work. “My system” just refers to the hardware into which you login, assuming they provide you with such. I refer to the laptop my employer provided as “my laptop” or “my work laptop” if there’s a need to disambiguate, but I’m under no illusions regarding what would happen to the hardware if I left the company.

Also, though my work laptop isn’t locked down like that person’s is, I’m not going to install anything not work related or login to any personal accounts. After all, I agree with you: it’s the employer’s laptop provided to allow me to advance their interests.

I remain very confused about the point you’re trying to make ?

Are you trying to say that if I don’t personally own the laptop that I use for work, then I have no right to complain about its shortcomings ?

I think old mate is confused about you saying “my laptop” when it’s your laptop provided by your workplace. He’s then telling you it’s not your laptop if they control what you can download (which it isn’t yours, it’s the workplace) . I’ve got absolutely no idea how the fuck horses entered the equation.

It’s wild to me that clocks stopped responding on non-primary windows. The first time I noticed that I thought it was broken- and I was right, because there’s zero rhyme or reason for removing that functionality.

I don’t think they removed it, as such, it’s more that they rewrote the clock from scratch and didn’t know the old clock did that, and didn’t care to find out.

Similar to how task manager used to suppress the refresh if shift was being held down and that no longer works in Windows 11 because they rewrote it and never looked at Dave’s original code.

I still can’t believe how slow the task manager is in windows 11, how do you ever release a task manager that is slower than before? Disgraceful developers and managers over there now

I think instead of the computer showing you the time, they should replace the clock program with a chat prompt so you can ask the computer to guess what the time is

Yeah, good luck. I’m fuddling about with a local AI setup, with RAG and web access, and it usually accesses like 2-3 websites and takes a bit to figure out time and date.

It takes Windows 11 a minute to load the “control panel” window… just hangs.

Re-release XP and be done with it, you’re bad and you should feel bad.

Early W10 was actually pretty decent. I have it running on a windows tablet, and a stick pc, both 2gb RAM.

One is getting Linux, but I have to do a bit of digging to decide on the distro, as many are becoming kind of bloated too.

      I use CP/M, BTW.

This is a fcking joke! I’m so sick of Microslop integrating AI into fcking everything. I just want to use my PC without any of this bloat. It just gets worse and worse. I can’t believe they would do somethi… wait a minute… I’m using linux. Nevermind then.

There’s no way to automatically open new folders in a tab. You can right click but in windows 11 it’s hidden in the more options menu by default. You can overcome some of this with regedit but I only use windows for work and naturally I’m locked out of that.

I have never been bothered by right clicking the folder then selecting new tab or new window if I don’t want to just enter the folder, but at the top of the window on the bar there are 3 dots. Click that icon and hit options it pops a settings window up and u can select if u want 2x or single click to perform action and if u want to just enter the folder or by default have it open in a new tab or window. If w11 did one thing well I thought it was the new file explorer lol. I haven’t done any regedits for these options but sucks to be locked out of that for many reasons!!

    Motherf-

    🤦🏻‍♀️

I started writing a clock app of my own because the Windows 11 clock app didn’t have a proper analog mode and it’s pretty useless. (Windows 3 clock app had analog mode, why not Windows 11?)

Some time ago I was ranting that instead of adding an analog mode, Microsoft will probably just pointlessly add Copilot to the clock app.

…Don’t blame me! I was just pointing out the obvious direction Microsoft is going for, whether we like it or not!

Aaaaanyway. This summer’s project is to figure out how the hell the Godot layout system works so I can make the layout responsive and I can release 1.1.
