A local Tennessee library board has fired the county’s top librarian for refusing to comply with its vote to move more than 100 LGBTQ books from the children’s to the adult section over claims that they promote “gender confusion.”

Would it be a good idea for librarians to unionize? Seems as if it would be a good way to fight back in numbers.

Librarians do have a union - looks like the largest is American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). I don’t know how much protection they really offer though.

Their labor doesn’t benefit Capital, so striking doesn’t really offer any benefits which means they lose the strongest bargaining card there is to play.

Good thing librarians aren’t afraid of letters cuz that’s a hell of an acronym. Can’t even pretend it’s a word.

The trouble is, librarians striking and thus preventing the libraries from functioning would only hand bookburning fascists exactly what they want.

Unfortunately, many professional librarians (those holding degrees in the field) are exempt managerial staff and are not protected by unions, especially in public libraries. At least in Canada anyway.
